pillow fight

April 27, 2012 By Linda 30 Comments

If pillows could fight it out …

… you know a la The Hunger Games with a fight to the death …

… with stitches ruthlessly ripped out and fabric torn and shredded to bits …

…then this pillow would kick the stuffing out of all the other pillows.

Pom Pom Drop Cloth Pillow 3

The Pom Pillow.

Pom Pom Drop Cloth Pillow 2

With the only real competition in the arena coming from this pillow …

Monogrammed Drop Cloth Pom Pom Pillow Close-up

… the Monogrammed Pom.

In the end, we’d have to call it a draw.  And crown the Pom and the Monogrammed Pom the King and Queen of all pillows.

… or, as my son would say, declare them the Chuck Norris of pillows.

Because until you’ve held a Pom Pillow in your hands …

… you have no idea what you’ve been missing.

Monogrammed Drop Cloth Pom Pom Pillow
Sure, there are a lot of great pillows out there.

In fact, you can find 133 and counting of them right here at our Pillowpalooza slumber party.

But the power of the Pom is undeniable …

Pom Pom Drop Cloth Pillow

…  indescribable …

I first became smitten with the Pom when I saw it in this freshy post.

And in that very same freshy post, I was directed to this tutorial at Living with Punks that showed me how to make the Pom …

… and I followed that tutorial …

I started with thick wool yarn …

Pom Pillow Yarn

… and wrapped it around a piece of 4” cardboard 60 or so times (not too loose, said poppa bear; not too tight said momma bear.  Just right, said baby bear) …

Pom Pillow Yarn Wrapped Final

I carefully slipped it off, retaining it’s shape and tied a piece of yarn around the middle …

Pom Pillow Yarn Tie Final

… and pulled tight and knotted …

Pom Pillow Yarn Tied

Then cut the loops on one side, and then the other …

Pom Pillow Yarn Pom Pom Pillow Pom rough

… and was left with a pom that needed some serious trimming.

So I trimmed trimmed and trimmed until I ended up with this …

Pom Pillow Pom final

… a posse of poms.

Twenty poms and one major blister-in-the-making down, I pinned five on each side …

Pom Pillow Poms Pinned

… and basted them on with a few stitches back and forth over the tie strings …

Pom Pillow Pom pinned closeup

With right sides together and poms tucked inside, I pinned …

Pom Pillow Ready to sew

… and oh so carefully sewed.

Then I turned inside out, inserted my homemade pillow form,

Pom Pillow in Chair with watermark

and gushed.

Pom A

Now, the making of the Pom Pillow is not for the feint of heart.  Or the blister averse. It’s a definite commitment.

So if you’re still just a player in the pillow field, you might want to wait until you’re ready for a serious relationship.

*sigh*

Pom Close Up

I think I’m in love.

Sorry honey.  The power of the Pom cannot be denied …

P.S.  Be forewarned.  You do not want to karate chop the Pom Pillow.  It will fight back.  And win.

    Very pretty.
    I used that wool-ease for a finger-knitted scarf.
It has a very pretty texture and movement.

For the record, I don’t karate chop my pillows! Love your pom poms although I think you could have made them even bigger so as to have more of an impact. Think of the pillow fights you could have then!!

That is a whole heck of a lot of work – but it is amazing!

You need 2 more hands – just think of all the poms you could create with an extra set!

That is a serious pillow and a serious time commitment to make it! I hope if you are selling it in your (fabulous) etsy shop, you are charging enough:)

I heart this pillow so much, I might be willing to take on a blister just to have one… or maybe just order one. 🙂 I keep stalking your Etsy shop — sooooo many lovelies to choose from.

Is it weird that I just want to lay a million pom-poms in a pile and snuggle up?

Yes. Probably. But they look so CUDDLY.

i was wondering when you were going to do a “toot” on this….Now that you have placed it in the “Chuck Norris” category…I think it will be fitting to make one for my granddaughter…and take it to her little “Ninja Turtle Class” and see who wins out…I am betting on the pillow may be larger than the girls and they would rather hug it than karate chop it!…
