the great white debate

February 18, 2012 By Linda 22 Comments

There seems to be a debate raging out there …

… and no, it’s nothing political.

Polarizing?  Perhaps.

Earth shattering? Absolutely and unequivocally not!

Silly … and maybe a bit petty …?

I have to concede and say yes…

You see, one of my favorite bloggers unveiled heramazing kitchen remodel this week …

image

It’s stunning. Right? Downright breathtaking in this blogger’s opinion …

Especially when you see the before.

The details and personal touches make it a stand out (and click here or on any of the pictures for even more fabulous-ness from Kelly at Eclectically Vintage) …

So naturally Apartment Therapy featured Kelly’s kitchen (as I knew they would) …

… and that’s when the can of worms about white cabinets was opened …

… the great white debate I refer to in my title, if you will …

Now I didn’t go white when I diy’d my builder’s grade oak cabinets.  At the time, I was more influenced by HGTV’s Income Property …

… than The Lettered Cottage.  I had yet to discover this home décor blog genre …

image

If I was to do it again today, I’m pretty sure I would veer more towards something like this …

image

… and, in fact, that exact kitchen is on my Pinterest board as inspiration for my kitchen’s next incarnation …

So as the debate over white kitchen cabinets simmers and stews, I thought I’d give a Pinterest board shout out to those equally talented and creative homeowners who embraced color …

… including Kelly’s bold move in the form of her amazing cherry red stove …

… and, of course, we must celebrate all those lovely natural and reclaimed wood lovers …

And in this post about white versus color versus wood I couldn’t overlook all those who, like me, were drawn to the dark side …

That’s the kitchen timer.

The debate is officially over.

Good design trumps all …

And one last kitchen that makes my heart go pitter patter.  Maybe I’m not quite ready to fully go into the light …

I love white cabinets, I painted ours white and sometimes I wish they were easier to clean. If I had the right house I would do a mix of white cabinets and reclaimed wood cabinets. The good thing about painted ones are you can always change them!

well, mine were white when we moved in, but the last kitchen we ‘did’ ourselves had natural cherry. I think it depends on the ‘vibe’ of the overall house.
    And now I’m exhausted.

Just popping in to express my love for Kelly’s kitchen. Truthfully all of the kitchens you posted are gorgeous but when I saw Kelly’s post the other day I think I might have swooned a little..

    Linda,
Thanks for sharing my kitchen!! It was a difficult decision – to go with color or not. I was going to do a colorful island but when i spotted that red stove, I wanted her to be the star attraction – and she is (yes, I refer to inanimate objects as she)!

I need a few more houses just so I can indulge all of my decorating whims!!

Yup, went white here. Just because my kitchen needed the light and I don’t feel like painting them again… anytime soon. 🙂

I vote for white which I am in the process of painting my cabinets now. I had them green which I loved but now I want a fresher brighter look. I have been linky followers blog hopping for two days and I am loving it. I have met so many amazing and talented people like you. I am now following you on linky and would love a follow back.

I’m stopping by from the Linky Followers blog hop. I’m your newest LinkyFollower and I hope you’ll come stop by my blog for a visit also!

All those kitchens are beautiful. We have maple cabinets throughout our house and my husband refuses to let me get near them with a paintbrush…the next house will definitely have something different!

Don’t you think life would be easier if we could change whatever we want with a twitch of our nose. Our husbands would wonder everyday if they came home to the right house!! But boy wouldn’t life be exciting!!
