what goes around …

May 22, 2012 By Linda 18 Comments

What’s so great about being trendy?

I mean really …

… just think about it …

When I was growing up in New Jersey, I followed the trends like my beagle follows the scent of food …

Parachute Pants: Check
Big Hair: Check
Neon Nails: Check
DIY Flashdance Sweatshirts: Check
Let’s Get Physical Olivia Newton John Headbands: Check, check and check …

I look back on my follow-the-trends former self and I cringe …

… and then I thank my lucky stars that I grew up without cells phones and Facebook and Twitter and Instagram so that my crimes against fashion aren’t plastered all over the internet …

… where they would remain for posterity.

So you can see why I’m a bit wary about home décor trends.  I’d prefer to not look back in a year or two and cringe …

Which can explain why I am oh so late to this blogger trend …

The sunburst mirror DIY.

art_deco_sunburst_mirror

Though, to add a classic twist that I hope can withstand the test of time … okay, the test of more than two years … I made mine with an art deco twist …

art_deco_sunburst_mirror_how_to_make_yourself

… using some mirrors that I picked up at Hobby Lobby.

art_deco_sunburst_mirror_how_to_make

And the “bursts” on the sunburst?  Those are wood shims that I slapped some silver paint on …

art_deco_sunburst_mirror_diy

I glued the rectangle mirrors to the shims with a hot glue gun.  And then I attached them all to the back of this …

art_deco_sunburst_mirror_tutorial 1 art_deco_sunburst_mirror_tutorial 2

… using some Power Grab (which, unlike the hot glue gun, gave me time to adjust the pieces).  Oh, and I Power Grabbed the picture hanger hardware onto the soccer ball side first …

But before any adhesive was squirted, I started with a dry fit … and I just eyeballed the spacing …

art_deco_sunburst_mirror_tutorial 5 art_deco_sunburst_mirror_tutorial 6

… and then it was time to glue everything down.  And, yes, I was very generous with the Power Grab …

art_deco_sunburst_mirror_tutorial 9 art_deco_sunburst_mirror_tutorial 10

In the center I glued a circular wood piece I found at JoAnn’s …

art_deco_sunburst_mirror_tutorial 11

…  but it wasn’t perfectly flat so I glued a small embroidery hoop ring onto the top …

art_deco_sunburst_mirror_tutorial 12

… and then I weighed it all down with a coin filled jar to dry overnight.

The next day, the mirror was attached.

And now it’s finished just in time to take it outside …

Fantastic project! Love it. And oh yes, I remember those silly fashion trends. My friends and I all dressed like Madonna with bangles up to our elbows and swinging knotted pearls hanging to our knees. And we all actually wondered why our mothers did not approve of this fad? We all looked like street walkers! lol!

How did you get that big thing to stay nice on the door and not bang around when it gets slammed?

    Linda,

Those with talent eye-ball it, those less crafty measure … you are one creative and talented lady! I love your addition to the standard starburst … the square mirrors on the, what would we call them … “spokes”? And the fact this piece is outdoor approved; I’m sure that’s going to be one classy outdoor space when you are done. Have a great Memorial Weekend and summer kick-off.

    Some trends are classic… some are disatric. Only time will tell, but for now, your sunburst mirror is smashing. {but hopefully, not literally. that would be bad}

Love the mirror! At first I thought the little mirrors were paint swatches, which would also be very “you”, but the HL mirrors are better:) Where are you hanging it? The screen porch? I can’t wait to see!
