On the Fence

board-batten-living-room (2 of 27)

This is how my living room has looked for the past few months.

Okay, not exactly like this …

Blue And White Striped Rug, Board and Batten Walls, Navy Walls

That look is unrealistically neat and organized for everyday life here at Paint.

Sure, there are green accents to celebrate Spring, like these polka dot pillow covers.

Navy and Green Living Room Decor

And flowers from the grocery store adding in a bit more green.

Navy & Green Decor

{The boys wanted to know if I had some chia experiment going on with this one.}

Striped Painted Table Top

But the major thing missing from this picture is a lanky, long-legged, blonde-haired-blue-eyed teenage girl sprawled across the couch …

typically with phone in hand and wrapped in a fleece blanket.

Navy and White Living Room Coastal Decor

And let’s not forget the mail that seems to accumulate everywhere. On the ottoman and the radiator cover.

And my laptop and laptop table is missing. I’m typically parked at the chair by the window where I work on this blog. And maybe waste some time taking Buzzfeed quizzes …

😉

But today’s post isn’t about decorating for Spring. I’m ready to close the door on the chartreuse green chapter and look ahead to Summer.

My initial plan was yellow. Sunny and bright and a fun contrast with the navy. But then I walked into Crate & Barrel. And World Market. And Pottery Barn. And did you know what I saw? Can you guess?

Not yellow, my friends.

Everything was blue. And coastal. Sea shells and jute and sailboats. Cooling colors of the sea.

And now I’m reconsidering the yellow. And thinking coastal blues …

So, what do you think? Should I go with the flow and follow the whole coastal blue and sea shell trend this summer? Or should I buck the trends and stick with yellow?

Weigh in in the comments thread. That is, if it’s working!

Arrrgh!

Technology will be the end of me. Okay, not me. But it’s definitely taking its toll on the blog …

🙂

I say go with the flow. Love anything coastal, seashells, colors, nautical decor for sure! It’s summertime and what better place to be but by the sea, the beautiful sea!

I do love the sea! I grew up on the east coast and miss the Atlantic ocean with all my heart! 🙂

I just spent a week in Edgewater, Maryland and look at a lot of Coastal colors and I do love them. I found a renewed love for all thing beach-ie and clean looking—just like your Navy and bright white. My vote is beach-ie with Blues soft Yellows!!

    Linda,
I know all the rage is the light sea blues but I think you should go with what you love. If the yellow is what you had in mind then go for it. One thing I have learned that if you go with what you love it will be the right decision. I have gone with trying to do a trend before and end up changing it back to what I love. Just sayin!!! I know what ever you decide it will be beautiful.

I’m toying with splitting the summer into two themes! Perhaps cool blue at first followed by bright sunny yellow when the heat really heats up! 🙂

I love blues and love your living room. The green you picked is perfect and also has somewhat yellow undertones.
I’d go against the norm, adding warm yellow and orange accents.

I love the green but if you must change – go with the coastal colors.

I think you need to do what you love and not worry about a “trend”! For me ocean/coastal is my lifestyle and that’s what I want reflected in my home year round regardless of other seasonal accents. So accent with whatever you love and, for the record having spent my life on the Atlantic Coast, yellow is definitely used!

You’re home is so cheery….keep it as it is, which is your personality shining through.

By the way, the sea look will be so yesterday by mid-summer when they change to something different for the cooler months.

Maybe it’s because I live in a beach area, blues and yellows scream the beach to me. Sand and sea. I also put a rusty orange with mine, which reflects the colour of the beach cliffs that my area is named after. Having said that I love aqua and teal.

LOL! Throwing yet another color in the mix! Though, it’s nice to have neutral palette that offers so many wonderful options!!! 🙂

I tend to do what I like, and especially stay away from trends. So I would say stick with your yellow, although I do like coral with navy and if you already have fabric, I’d say you have your choice! Also, I am not a fan of pillows. I know most designers love them, but I really dislike having to move pillows to sit down or be comfortable. Wish there was something else besides pillows to throw some pattern into a room.

Admittedly, some of the pillow are on the floor more than they are on the couch! So I do agree with you. But, then again, I just love how pillows are like the earrings on the couch! Hope you’re having a lovely weekend! 🙂 Linda

I see a lot of navy with a lime green (similar to what you already have) with pops of orange. I love how the orange just livens everything up. You have a nice neutral base to work with. The pillows are eye-catching.

For me, I’d go with the coastal blues with maybe a bit of the coral thrown in. I’m not a fan of yellow but blue is my favorite color.. BUT, it is not my room! It is you who will be looking at it, so if you want yellow, go with yellow! If you want blues, beachy water colors, go that way. Do what makes you happy.

And I’m still on the fence! But I do have blue pillow covers already made so I may just take the easy way out and go blue for Summer!!! Thanks for stopping by! 🙂 Linda

Not sure where things stand right now, (Am doing catch up on reading emails. So bad!) Yes, yellow would be good with a couple touches of orangeish yellow. Then when fall arrives you can add more vivid oranges with browns and reds. Just thinking. I tend to be a green fan, myself. Blessings.
