After the feast

After the giant turkey platter and roasting pans and chalkboard chargers have been washed and stored away for another year …

After the pumpkins have been cut and diced and sliced and mashed and baked into pies …

and eaten.

After the dryer vent pumpkins are stored away in the basement with the other seasonal decorations … and old bank statements … and miscellaneous furniture … and tchotchkes. Oh, and don’t forget about all the “stuff” I’ve been collecting for some future to-be-determined yard sale …

Thanksgiving-table-setting

After the turkey has been sliced and scraped and plucked free of each and every last morsel of delicious meat …

… and after those leftovers have been enjoyed all weekend long in the form of turkey, stuffing, and cranberry jelly sandwiches, the inevitable question arises:

When?

When will I haul out those many varied boxes of Christmas decorations?  When will I embrace the holiday season?  When will I adorn our home again with all that holly and jolly?

With great certainty I can answer that it did not happen this weekend …

And it will not happen next weekend …

But it will happen.    The “start” decorating date needs to be perfectly calibrated.  Because the “end” date won’t happen until after the New Year.  So I need to find the right balance where we fully enjoy our holiday house right through the kid’s winter break … and where the decorations become ho humDust collectors …

Oh, and you’ll be the first to know when I find that perfect “start” decorating date.

I know what you mean! I am looking forward to a little respite from the decorations. I think it should actually be December before I break out any Christmas finery…. IMHO.

Linda I know what you mean that is why I did simple this year! And I LOVE it! I always enjoy all the decor of Christmas but after a few weeks I can’t wait to take it down.Plus the fact of cleaning around it all. This year I am not doing much at all.But it still looks very festive.

can’t wait to see what you do! i have been sneaking in twinkle lights all over, too- like you did last year. they just make my heart smile, and shouldn’t my heart smile? :) your thanksgiving table looked amazing, by the way!

Linda, your table is gorgeous! We wouldn’t be ready to move on to Christmas either if our Thanksgiving decorations looked like that!

I started yesterday with the mantle, which looks goofy…and I began the tree, but diudn’t finish because I couldn’t find a box of ornaments that I need. I will have to dig through the attic when I get home from school. And if it doesn’t get done? So what? It will be the end of the world in a few weeks, right?

Yay! I’m pacing myself, too — though the kids were all up in it to decorate last night. The tree is in the house, but not decorated and that’s as far as I’ve gotten. I really want to enjoy the process and not just the result this year.

PS — happy Cyber Monday! Hope the shop goes gangbusters today!

I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who hasn’t started putting up decorations yet! It’s easy to get discouraged seeing all the beautiful, beautiful Christmas decorations all over blog land, you haven’t had a chance to take your Thanksgiving stuff down yet!

I knew you were one of my people! Feeling a bit out of step in blogland because I have not jumped on the Christmas train yet. Next weekend we’ll get our tree put up. And the other stuff? Probably won’t happen until the weekend after that. I love to let Thanksgiving weekend be about Thanksgiving. A little calm before the red and green storm. :-) Besides, we still have a tree full of beautiful orangey leaves; hard to feel wintery when it’s still in full fall throttle outside. Will love to see what you’ve got when the time is right.

I absolutely love love love your dryer vent pumpkins!! I signed up to follow you at first glance of your table! My husband swears I will paint anything that’s not moving :) Can’t wait to see what you’re up to next!

I look forward to coming along for the ride. Your Thanksgiving table and crafts were inspiring and beautiful..just as I am sure your Christmas decorations will be. I, unfortunately, will be dusting my Christmas decorations, since I just put them up this past weekend :)

I’ve already started and I’ve gotten more than halfway finished! My husband is making me wait until Dec. 1 for the tree, but everything else is out and up ;) I think I need more though only 2 Christmases together means I dont have nearly enough decorations!

  12. says

Good for you. I had to get started because I was afraid I wouldn’t have time to do it if I waited! Stuff is everywhere though and nothing is completely finished. All that will happen eventually…it always does. Sounds like you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I’m so glad…ours was quiet but nice. Have a good week ~ Ann

Can’t wait to see it all! I started my decor today – will probably take me all week with everything else I’ve got going on. but that’s ok, less time to collect dust cause mine goes through the new year too.

Sad to say that my house is pretty schizophrenic during Thanksgiving…Is it Thanksgiving or Christmas..?…for you see, if I started after Thanksgiving, the trees will be done and the boughs of holly will finally be placed just before Easter!
Looking forward to all of your fantastic creations!
