fabric flowers

fabric-flower-how-to

Last week I was just sitting here minding my own business. Getting some work done.  Painting some mason jar orders.  Making a few pillows.  Taking a break here and there to hop online.  Check things out.  Peruse Facebook. And Pinterest. And then it happened …

Bam!

I happen upon a picture … this picture … and I’m consumed.

I need to make them.  I need to figure out how to make them.  So I start experimenting.  Cutting up scraps of fabric this way and that way …

and I’m failing miserably.

Just when I was ready to throw in the towel, I happened upon this post.  Fabric pom poms.  And I start thinking about how those pom poms could also be fabric flowers.  Fabric mums, to be more precise …

So I grabbed some cardboard and some t-shirts and I get to work.  Starting with making my form …

The outer edge measures approximately 5 inches in diameter.

The inner circle measures approximately 1” in diameter.

And I made two.

Next I cut strips of fabric – using t-shirts – about 3/4” wide.

I placed one strip on the form.

And then sandwiched it between the other form.

Then I started wrapping the strips around the form.

After I wrapped the strips around for three full times, I lightly tied off the strips sandwiched between the two forms.

And then I cut …

And then I tied those two strings as tight as I can …

Before I removed the forms.

After which I trimmed.

Before adding a stem.

The end.

I wonder what will catch my attention – and obsession – this week?  It might be safer if I just stayed offline …

I have to make these in all sorts of colors for my door wreath. Any particular size shirt you’d recommend? Wondering if I can get away with kids shirts. Thank you!
