a homeless home office

May 19, 2012 By Linda 13 Comments

My home office is everywhere.

It’s scattered about the house.

Bits of post-its with reminders stuck to the laptop …

… notes with pearls of wisdom paper the coffee table …

… spiral notebooks scrawled with witticisms and brilliant prose that will keep you on the edge of your seat …

… glued to your chair …
… asking – no, make that begging — for more …

… litter the dining room table.

Technically, I could create a home office space in our basement addition.  It’s a comfortable and cozy space we brightened up with windows and Berber carpet …

… and it was dug out by hand to be deeper than our existing low-ceiling basement dungeon.

But, I’m not a basement dweller.  I mean, how could I Mrs. Kravitz the neighbors while hanging out in subterranean digs at the back of the house?

So, I took my cue from this blogger (and fellow Chicagoan) …

… and found a cute vintage suitcase at the Salvation Army.  Priced at $2.99 I practically tripped over myself when I saw it lying on the floor.  Oh, and the frame was $.99 and the wire basket was $1.99.

And now my blogging brilliance is safely packed away in my homeless home office:  A vintage powder blue suitcase …

Ahhh Mrs Kravitz, how I miss her!! My office is a complete shambles. I hope by the end of this summer to have finished my bathroom reno, cleaned up the laundry space, built my kitchen pantry cabinet and bar table and sold a whole bunch of excess furniture, yard stuff, decorations and all that other stuff that is taking up valuable space so I can have the office looking shipshape and tidy. Then I can work on my studio – lol!

I’m glad you found your office & it’s so compact as well. xox

Lost my office when we moved. We have a little tiny room on the side, but it’s not heated or cooled. The floor is also rotten. I wish we could move it up a little higher on the “things to do” list, but ther are more pressing issues, like no electrical outlets.

Linda- I have a feeling your blue suitcase will find a home:) I realized this wek with my mother in law visiting, that my “office” just wasn’t cutting it. It has glass doors to the play area which means I am still available for all that pesky mommy-ing that kids under 5 need. Like a million snacks a day, “I just fed you!”! Anyway, I took over my husband’s office for a few hours, it was heaven, quite, at the top of the house so they were too lazy to trek up all the stairs, and there is a TV in there! So i could watch trash tv while blogging. Now that is a mini-staycation:)

That wire basket is AWESOME!! Can’t wait to see where you make your office a home in your home. Wherever it is, that suitcase will be vintage coolness. 🙂

Wait a minute … still picturing it!

OK, they are fabulous (will come back another time to see if my imagination and your finds are a match)!
